Curiosity Scale
Ludic Design

Speculative Design project - Ludic Design
As a one of the projects for the course IAT431 Speculative design, my team and I were asked to design an artifact that would represent the meaning of a Ludic design. My Team and I choose the form of an comedic scale that will tell it’s users the labor cost of that product. The point of this project is to think of a way to critique an aspect of social inequality that would stirr a discussion among the people interacting with the artifact. This project was created in the span of one week.

Digital Process
We first come up with a design artifact (Figure 1, then we decided to make that as a scale that will tell how much labor cost that goes into creating that a product that you are weighing (Figure 2).

Figure 1.

Then I proposed the idea of including internet memes into our product as an effective way to relate to users and to include a comedic aspect into the artifact. The comedic meme would then be printed on a sheet of paper the artifact would print out (Figure 3).
Figure 3.
We then brainstorm of a way to communicate that in a very light or even humorous way (Figure 3).
Figure 4.
On the print out there will be many data explaining the pains of the labour that has gone into making the product that you are scaling. Other comedic aspects of the brochure was initially my proposal.

To make the product seem less serious and fun we decided to have the color yellow as a background of the brochure (Figure 5). then because we felt it is too empty, I proposed that we should visualize the steps shown on how the product works. I’ve illustrated the scale the items and the receipt as an icon, I’ve also visualized the humorous image of a person crying while my teammate altered the color to be black so it fits with the rest of the icon (Figure 6). Because our artifact is quite unique we thought it is fitting that we recognized this item as a “ridiculous gift” that would be sold at the quirky section of a store like indigo or winners.

This is the final iteration of our brochure for the artifact. Because we thought the purple color is too vibrant and tacky we changed the color to yellow, red and dark blue (Figure 8). Most of the digital process was done on figma since it is easier to collaborate together and work on the same document.
